The 2009 fall turkey hunting season showed a harvest increase over the 2008 season. During the fall
2009 season, hunter’s harvested 1244 birds. The 2008 season recorded 1206 birds harvested.
According to the West Virginia Division of Natural Resources the top five counties for fall turkey harvest in
    2009 were Monroe (116 birds), Nicholas (114), Greenbrier (99), Preston (82) and Mason (81).

This is an excellent showing for Monroe County as hunters in Monroe harvested 60 birds in 2008. The
near doubling over the 2008 season is somewhat surprising. However if you look at Nicholas County’s
harvest in 2008 of 39 birds you are looking at a nearly 300% increase.

Wildlife biologist had predicted a slightly higher fall harvest based on good brood counts in the
“traditional” fall counties of the Mountain Region. Charlie Nichols, president of the West Virginia National
Wild Turkey Federation noted a huge mast crop in Nicholas County in the fall. “White oak, hickory, and
beech were all apparent both on the ground and still in the trees in late October,” Nichols noted.

Twenty four of West Virginia’s counties were open to Fall Turkey season in 2009. Twenty six counties
were open in 2008. Fall turkey hunting is a great sport to enjoy. You may have to travel more to do it but
the time spent in the woods can lead to a successful hunt
