The R. Wayne Bailey Memorial Chapter (Mercer County) of the National Wild
Turkey Federation donated 32 frozen domestic turkeys to the Bluefield Union
Mission on Friday, November 20. These farm-raised, all natural turkeys were
purchased with the cooperation of Chris Blankenship, owner of Wayne’s
Supermarket in Mullens, WV. Chris allowed the chapter to purchase these
turkeys at wholesale cost in an effort to help this non-profit organization supply
as many turkeys as possible to the needy families of this area during
Thanksgiving.
This donation is a part of the NWTF’s Turkey Hunters Care program, which is
about brightening the holidays for others. Often it does not take much to reach
out with a helping hand to brighten someone’s darkest times, and the Turkey
Hunters Care program is about reaching out that hand. This donation to the
Union Mission is the first time the Mercer County chapter has participated, but
the chapter plans to participate in this program annually. Nationally, the Turkey
Hunters Care program began in 2001 and to date; over 90,800 turkeys have
been donated to American families in need.
The chapter volunteers raised the money to purchase these turkeys by selling
raffle tickets for three donated items. The donated items were an electric indoor
turkey fryer, a JAKES bicycle, and an original hand painted, framed turkey
feather by local artist and chapter member Brian Aliff. Craig Hammond of the
Bluefield Union Mission pulled the three winning tickets from the bucket on Friday
evening. The winners were notified by phone Friday evening and arrangements
were made for the delivery of the items.
The NWTF is a national non-profit conservation and hunting organization that
was established in 1973 when there were only 1.3 million wild turkeys. Along with
its volunteers and sponsors, and the dedication of founding fathers such as R.
Wayne Bailey (a Mercer County native), the number of wild turkeys now stands at
more than seven million throughout North America. The NWTF continues to work
toward the conservation of the wild turkey and the preservation of our hunting
heritage. The vision of the NWTF is a very simple one: Hunt. Conserve. Share.
