Overall JAKES
Call seminar
The R. Wayne Bailey Memorial Chapter held its 2nd annual JAKES event on
July 25, 2009 at the Hatcher United Methodist Church property in Princeton,
WV.
There were 32 JAKES in attendance which was quadruple the number in
attendance in 2008.  The outdoor activities began with a wildlife seminar presented by
WVDNR officer Craig Lawson.   The children were divided into four groups and rotated
between stations that included: gun safety seminar and shooting .22 rifles supervised
by Craig Lawson and Kevin Martin, predator pelt seminar and calling seminar
conducted by Brian Aliff, and fishing supervised by chapter members and parents.
Additional highlights of the day included a hay ride by wagon and tractor to the pond,
“crawdad catching” in the creek, grilled hot dogs and all the picnic fixings, a call
competition, and multiple door prizes and gifts for each participant.  Winners of the call
competition were awarded custom calls donated by Ty Calls.

Chapter President Lewis Nave would like to thank members Angie and Kevin Martin,
Brain Aliff, Bernie Shorter, Jim Baker, the David Bailey family and the Donald White
family for making this JAKES event a huge success.  Special thanks are extended to the
sponsors of this event:  the NWTF (financial support), the WV State Chapter (use of
youth .22 rifles), Allen’s Supermarket (all picnic supplies), ThermaCell (two units with
carrying holsters), Ty Calls (multiple custom calls), Hatcher United Methodist Church
(use of the property), and Mr. Allen Dunnigan (hay rides and fishing in his pond).
Parent Kristi Furgeson, grandparent Bobbi Graham and volunteer Matthew Martin were
also instrumental in making this event a success.

During this event the chapter also had on display three donated items that will be
raffled: a 2007 JAKES bicycle, a Turkey Gold electric turkey fryer, and an original
matted and framed hand painted turkey feather created by artist and chapter member
Brian Aliff.  Raffle tickets were sold at the JAKES event and will continue to be sold
through the fall.  Cost is $1 each or six tickets for $5. Money raised with this raffle will
be used for community service in Mercer County. If interested in purchasing tickets, or
viewing photos of the items, please contact the chapter by email:
