Turkey Federation members:
Once again, legislation has been introduced to transfer the
oversight of “Deer Farms” from the DNR to the Dept. of
Agriculture. This legislation is also designed to change the
definition of white-tailed deer from wildlife to livestock.
Currently the Dept. of Agriculture does not have the funds to
support the responsibility this legislation will assign. “Deer
Farmers” and their lobbyists have convinced legislators that
the DNR will provide that funding……This is not true!
Once the Dept. of Agriculture takes over “Deer Farms”
……Hunting & Fishing License money cannot be used. That
money is protected by the State Constitution and cannot be
diverted to another Agency of State Government.
If this legislation passes, the Department of Agriculture will
- Freely allow transportation of captive whitetail into and out of
WV - Allow sale of white-tail venison in restaurants and grocery
stores - Promote the killing of large-racked bucks behind fences for
personal profit
